Kuwait’s Helping Hand in the South of Beirut and Lebanon

Janoubia reports recognize a list of donations made by the State of Kuwait to Lebanon proving without a doubt the quality of the strong relationship between the two countries.

While some attempts are being made to undermine the Lebanese Kuwaity relationship, it is crucial to recall what the state of Kuwait has offered in donations in the recent past not only to Lebanon in general, but particularly to the southern suburb, the villages of south Lebanon, and Hezbollah. Here is a list of few of these generous donations:

  • After the Liberation of the south in year 2000, Kuwait rebuilt the southern town of Hanin that was demolished in the year 1978 by the Israeli army.
  • Kuwait built the south suburb municipalities complex located on the old airport road in Haret Hreik, knowing that the these municipalities and most of their project are run by Hezbollah themselves.
  • They built a medical center in Al-Maamoura, also in the south suburb, managed by the Islamic Health Authority (the medical branch for Hezbollah).
  • In 2002, The Kuwaity fund of Arab Economic development granted a loan worth 50 million dollars to finance the construction of 22 public schools in the capital of Beirut and its suburbs.
  • After the July 2006 war, Kuwait provided a monetary fund worth $500 million to support the central bank. In addition, $300 million were donated to reconstruct what Israel had destroyed in its war against Lebanon. Several agreements were signed commencing projects to rebuild vital sectors such as health, water and sanitation, roads and infrastructure; as well as social services in the areas of south, Baalbeck, and Beirut’s affected suburbs.
  • Kuwait was responsible for the reconstruction of up to 21 villages in the south of Lebanon.
  • A loan of 9 million Kuwaiti Dinars (34 million dollars) from the Arab Fund for Economic and Social Development was granted to contribute to the financing of the administrative development project in collaboration with the Office of the Minister of State for Administrative Development Affairs.
  • A loan of KD 5 million ($ 19 million) from the Kuwait Fund for Economic Development was issued to complete water related projects in several areas of Lebanon.
  • On January 17, 2015, the Director General of the Kuwait Fund for Arab Economic Development, Abdulwahab Al-Bader, launched from the South Suburb municipality complex the new civil defense and emergency center of the South Suburb (Old airport road); in the presence of representatives from both Hezbollah and Amal movement.
